Products which are used in the foodstuff, pharmaceutical, cosmetics and chemical industry are subject to strict hygienic demands and have to be sterilized, normally; this means that the products are heated for a short time (according to demand) up to high temperatures, in order to eliminate germs.

We distinguish between direct steam and indirect sterilisation plants, which operate either continuous or discontinuous.

Direct steam sterilisation

With the direct steam sterilisation the product is directly mixed with steam. By means of an injection nozzle the sterile steam is added to the product. A downstreamed variable heating line determines the heating-holding time.

After a pressure keeping valve the temperature of the product is suddenly decreased in a vacuum separator by means of flash (from high pressure to vacuum).
The vapours (volatile steam), arising from this process, can be used for heating the downstreamed evaporator stages or they can be condensed and pumped out via a surface condenser.

The direct steam sterilisation is mainly used for sensitive products which have to be treated with short heating-holding times and high temperatures.

Indirect sterilisation

With the indirect sterilisation in contrast, the product does not come into contact with the heating medium.

The heating takes place by heat exchanger systems, this means that either plate- or tube heat exchangers are used.

The indirect sterilisation is mainly used for products which have to be treated gently or which should not come into direct contact with the heating medium. Heating mediums could be steam, hot water or electric heat.
